Elapsed Time

This week we will be working on elapsed time in math. This tends to be a very challenging skill for third graders. Ways that you can help:

  • Make sure that your child can tell time. Especially check to see if they can tell time when it is getting close to a new hour and therefore the hour hand is close to the next number.
  • Get your child an analog watch.
  • Ask your child simple and real world elapsed time questions. "We are having dinner in 15 minutes. What time are we having dinner?"
  • Watch the homework videos on the parent help website.
Students will be learning to do elapsed time on a number line. I know this may be  new strategy for you. I made this simple video last year to show the strategy.

Brag Tags

Brag tags are a powerful tool that I use in the classroom to motivate students to reach academic, character and behavior goals. The kids LOVE them and they are so simple!

On the first day of school, I gave each student their first brag tag.

This is the only brag tag that I will be GIVING to them. From now on, all tags must be EARNED! There are several different ways that tags can be earned.

  • A tag is earned for every 20 i-Ready lessons that a student passes. They are tracking their progress every week.
  • A tag is earned for completing the entire math fact station. They have time during centers to work on the math fact station, but they are working at their own pace.
  • Students will be earning brag tags for their reading hours.
  • One student each month will be chosen to earn the character trait brag tag for the month. This student will be chosen based on their work on the character calendar in their binder. I blogged about this last week, so scroll down for more info!
Students may also earn tags for individual goals. I always want to push my students to grow. These types of tags may differ from one student to another because their goals and needs differ.

Tags are awarded every Friday morning. Students wear the necklaces on Friday- with pride! At the end of the year, they should have a pretty great collection to bring home!

We have already had our first i-Ready brag tag recipient! Congrats to Troy who has already passed 20 i-Ready lessons!

Who will be earning a tag this week?!

Art Masterpiece

We were so excited to have Mrs. Lee come in and do an Art Masterpiece lesson with us on Friday! Students learned a little about Picaso and then did oil resist paintings of a flower vase. Their work turned out amazing.

Aren't these paintings beautiful?!!! And this is just a sample... You will see them all at Cottage Fair!

Mrs. Lee was so kind and generous to leave me with a vase full of beautiful flowers. Every time I look at them, I think of my sweet students!

Thanks for sharing your talented artists with me!

Character Counts

Our third grade classroom will have a heavy focus on character traits this year! We feel that developing positive character traits is an essential skill that will be of great value throughout their life. I want to share a little about how we will be focusing on the character traits.

Each month we will highlight a different trait. For example, during the month of August we are learning about optimism. The trait will be posted on our class focus board.

Besides learning what the character trait means, we also want students to practice using the trait and noticing when classmates and book characters use the trait. You may have seen the green August character trait calendar in your child's binder.

Students were challenged to fill in the examples and definitions and to find ways to show optimism at school and at home. A list of activities were given to them. As they complete an activity, they can cut it out and glue it to the calendar.

They do not have to do an activity for every day, but they are encouraged to do as many as possible. They will turn their calendar in at the end of the month. Students who participate and give thoughtful responses will be considered for character trait brag tags!

In addition to our class character trait program, the school is asking all students to memorize the Character Counts Pledge. This is one of the requirements for earning their associates degree through our school wide collegiate program. A copy has been placed in your child's binder.

Please help us to reenforce these character traits. Ask your child how they showed optimism today. Help to point out when someone is being optimistic. Encourage them to complete the character trait calendar and memorize the pledge.

Thanks for al that you do!
